Frequently Asked Questions

Aviation Mentoring

What is aviation mentoring?

Aviation mentoring is for any new or aspiring pilot who is eager to expand their network and their knowledge. We connect these new pilots with an experienced aviation professional in a formal mentorship. Our goal is to equip upcoming pilots with a solid plan for their future, and to help them stay focused, passionate, and driven.

How and where will mentoring take place?

All mentoring will take place remotely. We encourage the sessions to be held in TeamSpeak (a Voice over IP client) however, phone and video chat may also be used. Your mentor will be selected based upon your goals and interests, and they will email you to schedule a first meeting.

How do you select someone to be mentored?

If you have aspirations of becoming a pilot, you have met the main criteria for being mentored. Let our mentors help you begin planning your path into aviation or provide advice for whatever stage you are at in the flight training process.

Pilot Development

What is Pilot Development?

In a nutshell, it is the most convenient and realistic way to learn to fly in a simulated environment. Although Pilot Development is supplemental and does not replace training from an actual CFI in a real aircraft, we can have a ton of fun, expand your aviation knowledge and keep you moving toward your goals. We will tap into the full potential of your home-based flight simulator by using it as a teaching tool. Once you and an instructor are remotely sharing a cockpit and chatting in TeamSpeak (a Voice over IP client), you can experience the satisfaction of shooting a flawless approach, perfecting radio calls, nailing maneuvers and so much more.

How do you select someone for pilot development?

Unlike our Mentoring Program which is intended for serious aspiring pilots, Pilot Development is suited for anyone who wants to experience realistic flight lessons in a simulated environment.

How will flight training take place?

You can work with an instructor from anywhere as long as you've got a computer with the necessary software (home-based flight simulator and TeamSpeak), Internet, speakers, a microphone and a joystick. Your instructor will work out a schedule that fits your needs.

What are the hardware requirements?

Listed below are the minimum items you will need in order to begin developing your skills. While it may seem like a daunting list, do not fear! We will work with you through each step of the setup process at no additional cost. It is important to remember that most of these are one-time investments that will pay off forever in your aviation education.

  • Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later
  • Processor: 2.0 Ghz or higher (single core)
  • Memory: 2 GB RAM
  • Graphics: DirectX 9 compliant video card; 256MB Video RAM or higher
  • Hard Drive: 30 GB available space
  • Headset or earbuds with a microphone. The headphones that likely came with your cell phone will be sufficient
  • USB Joystick ~ 30$

What if I don’t have a home-based simulator and all this other stuff you’re talking about?

With a minimal investment we can work with you to get all the necessary hardware and software set up. You’ll be connected with one of our Pilot Mentors or Instructors in no time.

How does training in a simulator compare to training in an aircraft?

Each have their place in flight training. No simulator can replicate the "feel" of flying in an aircraft, but it can help you become familiar with checklist usage, procedures, and more.

Can you sign my logbook?

No. Our training does not replace instruction by a real-world CFI. We are not working with the FAA, nor have we been certified by the FAA as a flight school. We are providing a service of high-quality information (based on FAA practical test standards) and instruction (from real Certified Flight Instructors) to boost your flying game.

What are the software requirements?

  • Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition (Yes, we ONLY use the Steam Edition) $24.99 OR
    X-Plane 10 (Regional North America only) ~ $30
  • Flight Simulator Aircraft Model ~ $26
  • PilotEdge Subscription 19.95$/month or 179$/year
  • TeamSpeak 3 Client - Get started
